Fine for delayed graduation postponed
The study-delay fine of state secretary of Education Halbe Zijlstra is postponed with one year, RTL News reported yesterday.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Education later confirmed the news to Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad.
The study-delay fine means that students have to pay 3000 euros extra if it takes them longer than four years to finish their undergraduate degree, or two years longer for a master’s degree. The measure would become effective from September 1, 2011.
Guy Hendricks, president of the Dutch National Students Association (ISO) , is pleased with the developments, he says in daily de Volkskrant. “It is good to see that the efforts we have made ??are paying off. We remain of the opinion that the bill is illegal and it should therefore not only be postponed but it should be dropped entirely. ”
