Marieke Quant elected teacher of the year ‘with an overwhelming majority’
Math teacher Marieke Quant has been elected Teacher of the Year 2024 at Tilburg University. She teaches courses such as Mathematical Analysis and Probability Theory to econometrics students. Quant wins the student election with an ‘overwhelming majority’, the jury reports.

The jury praises her passion and urge to innovate: ‘She also passes it on to new and young teachers, whom she helps in their development.’ Quant’s teaching methods are also up to date: ‘She teaches in an interactive way, using a tablet to make difficult material accessible.’
Solving a puzzle
In an introductory video for the election, Quant says: ‘Teaching feels like solving a puzzle to me. When I see that the penny drops, it means that the puzzle has been solved.’ It is important for a teacher to understand students, she explains. “That’s why they have to show their line of thinking when they answer my questions and also ask questions themselves. So that I can adapt my explanation to what they need.’
In addition to the honor and the title of Lecturer of the Year 2024, Quant was presented with cake and flowers from Vice-Rector Jantine Schuit and Student Party SAM last Friday. She will also receive a bonus of 4,000 euros and be nominated for national Lecturer of the Year election, run by ISO, the Dutch National Student Association.
Annual election
Tilburg University holds the annual Teacher of the Year election, together with Student Party SAM. Nominated candidates are judged by a jury and students can vote. Those scores both count for half.
