Who has to pay for the damage to the Maagdenhuis?

The tax payer, the occupiers or the University of Amsterdam (UvA): who is going to pay for the damage to the Maagdenhuis and the Bungehuis? The House of Representatives says the bill has to go to the occupiers. But the UvA has different plans. The House of Representatives calls on minister Bussemaker of Education to talk to the UvA about the damage costs. The majority of the representatives thinks that the money has to be collected from the occupiers. The House is afraid that the tax payer will end up paying the money if the UvA is the one to bear the costs. The UvA does not share this view. In a press release, the university states that it has an extensive danger insurance and it plans on claiming the money from the insurance company. Besides that, the Board does not want to hold all the occupants responsible. Among them are a lot of peaceful students that did not do any damage. They had the right to protest, because ’the academic community is free in the debate about innovation’. The university did report the trespassing and demolitions to the police, but did not press charges against individual occupiers. The UvA estimates the total damage is 460.000 euros, after the first taxation from the university’s Facility Services. The money is for extra security, cleaning, checking and restarting the elevators, paint jobs, replacing computers and loss of earnings for the vending machines and catering.
